Khartoum sits where the Blue and White Niles collide, and its weather is as unforgiving as the desert that rings it. This is one of the hottest capitals on earth. The question is never if it will be hot, only how hot and whether a breeze will bother to show up. The rhythm is simple: a long dry season from October through May, a short transition in June and early July when haboobs roll in like brown tidal waves, and a brief rainy window from July through September that barely whispers relief. Annual rainfall totals around 120 mm, most of it squeezed into six August and September weeks. That tells you how parched the rest of the year remains. What sets Khartoum apart from other scorched cities is the April-May increase. Daytime highs hit 42°C (107°F) and nights refuse to cool below 27°C (82°F). Clouds vanish. Wind forgets the way. Then the wet season inches north from central Africa and temperatures ease, if you can call a drop to 38°C (101°F) in July an ease. Humidity climbs. August feels like a bargain: slightly cooler afternoons traded for air thick enough to chew. The only stretch when you can walk outside without wilting is November through February. Highs hover in the low-to-mid 30s Celsius (87-92°F) and nights dip to 16-18°C (60-64°F). Locals may call a December morning brisk. Anyone from a temperate zone will call it warm. Still, January and February give you the closest thing to pleasant the city ever offers.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Cultural
November through February is the clear window. Daytime heat is still there. But it is manageable. Walk the markets, browse the National Museum, watch the Blue and White Niles merge at the northern tip. Humidity is lower then. That single fact makes moving between sites far easier.
Adventure
December and January are probably your best bet. Highs around 31-33°C (87-92°F) pair with very low humidity. Desert air stays warm yet does not drain you. Long excursions become possible. No other months allow this freedom.
Budget
July and August see fewer international visitors. Heat and humidity scare them off. Hotel rates may dip in response. You trade savings for brutal conditions. August brings 36°C (98°F) highs plus 53 mm of rain. The rain falls in sudden, heavy bursts. Air turns into a steam bath. Adjustment takes time.
Local Experience
May and June have raw character. Haboobs sweep through like freight trains. Afternoons slow to a crawl. You will see Khartoum adapting to its own extremes. Comfort is absent. Honesty is not.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Khartoum.

Year-Round Essentials
high-SPF sun protection in both cream and lip balm form
the sun at this latitude and in this dry air is aggressive even in the "cooler" months, and reflective surfaces near the Nile amplify the effect.
A good pair of UV-blocking sunglasses
non-negotiable rather than optional.
Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in natural fibers - linen and cotton
breathe far better than synthetics in dry heat.
A scarf or light cotton shawl
worth its negligible weight for managing both sun exposure and the occasional haboob, when covering your face and hair with something breathable is far more comfortable than trying to push through the dust without it.
A reusable water bottle large enough to carry you between sources
Staying hydrated is more difficult than most travelers expect in this climate.
cool season (November through February)
Clothing
a light jacket or a layer
Footwear
Closed-toe shoes or sandals with good coverage
Layering Tip
16°C (60°F) nights feel cold after days in the low 30s Celsius, and anyone sitting outdoors along the Nile in January will be glad of something extra after sunset.
hot season (March through June)
Footwear
breathable sandals with secure straps
Layering Tip
Closed-toe shoes become inadvisable for long outdoor stretches. Leather and synthetics trap heat like ovens.
brief rainy season (July through September)
Clothing
a packable waterproof layer
Layering Tip
worth carrying for the afternoon downpours, which arrive suddenly and can be heavy for short periods.
Plug Type
Type C and Type D plugs (the round two-pin European type and the older three-round-pin type)
Voltage
230V/50Hz
Adapter Note
a universal adapter that covers both Type C and D will cover you in most situations you'll encounter.
Skip These Items
heavy denim or thick cotton fabrics An umbrella Anything that requires refrigeration or careful temperature management Heavily scented products Insulating footwear designed for cold-weather climates
